Symmetry and shape variability characterize snow flakes.
Their growth proceeds from tiny ice crystallites respecting the six-fold symmetry of the microscopic ice crystal structure.
The shape of each flake reflects its history, depending on the concentration of water vapor and temperature of the air layers it flew through.
